KCJ/0CECN– Czech for Foreigners – Nonslavic Speakers

  • The course KCJ/0CECN, which takes the form of practical tuition, is designed specifically for international students (non-native speakers of Czech) from non-Slavic countries (e.g., Germany, Spain, France, Turkey, Romania) who have no prior experience of the Czech language.
  • Beginners from Slavic countries should enrol for a course designed specifically to meet their needs – the course KCJ/0CECS –, whereas more advanced students (regardless of their country of origin) should enrol for KCJ/0CECT.
  • The course KCJ/0CECN focuses on the basics of the Czech language, the acquisition of elementary conversation skills, and the ability to produce written texts and to understand both written and spoken the language. Students reinforce their knowledge of basic Czech grammar and vocabulary. In practical tuition sessions, they learn how to function in basic communicative situations (shops, restaurants, hotels, stations, study-related situations), write short messages and letters, compile a simple CV, complete a form, arrange a meeting, etc. Attention is also focused on practising grammar and pronunciation.
  • Teaching is both in Czech and in English.
  •  !!!For the classes, you need to buy the textbook David, J.: Czech in Ostrava. How not to get lost in Czech and in Ostrava. Ostrava: Ostravská univerzita, 2014. 154 p.; and a pocket Czech-English and English-Czech dictionary/dictionaries. They are available at the Faculty Bookstore (situated on the ground floor of the Welcome Centre, Mlýnská Street 5; Building G).

  • The course KCJ/0CECS, which takes the form of practical tuition, is designed specifically for international students (non-native speakers of Czech) from Slavic countries (e.g., Poland, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan) who have no prior experience of the Czech language.
  • Beginners from non-Slavic countries should enrol for a course designed specifically to meet their needs – the course KCJ/0CECN –, whereas more advanced students (regardless of their country of origin) should enrol for KCJ/0CECT.

KCJ/0CECT Czech for Foreigners – Texts

  • The course, which takes the form of practical tuition, is designed specifically for international students (non-native speakers of Czech) whose knowledge of the Czech language is at least on A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).
  • Working with authentic materials (including audio recordings), students are acquainted with texts of various styles and genres (e.g., TV and radio reports, interviews, fairy-tales, lectures, presentations, poetic texts, or instruction manuals). Emphasis is placed on developing students’ communication skills and reinforcing their knowledge of the relation between standard and non-standard forms, as well as on enhancing their ability to express themselves in Czech (both in written and oral texts). The tuition takes place in Czech.
  • Beginners from non-Slavic countries should enrol for the course KCJ/0CECN, whereas beginners from Slavic countries should enrol for the course KCJ/0CECS.
 
 
KCJ/7FIKF Film Club

  • The course presents topics from Czech, European and world cinematography. Films are presented with original sound with Czech or English subtitles, if available.
  • The course is taught in Czech.
 

KCJ/0CEER Czech Language and Culture
Lecture/practical tuition:  0+1

  • The course Czech Language and Culture (KCJ/CECIN), which takes the form of practical tuition, acquaints international students (non-native speakers of Czech) with the basics of the Czech language, Czech history and culture.
  • During language lessons, attention is focused on basic grammar, phrases, specific features of Czech orthography, pronunciation and vocabulary and specific issues about the orientation in the Czech Republic (signs, menu, timetables etc.).
  • The course also covers topics from Czech history and culture; attention focuses on the way of life in the Czech Republic, and in Ostrava as well. During the course, there are also made guided tours.
  • Teaching is in both English and in Czech (mostly language practice lessons).
